Burn!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ah well. I always get the “Hmm… it looks like you have a lot of punctuation.” popup when I answer these anyway. I like ellipses.

Burn scars might not ever totally go away. You have damaged or destroyed top layers of skin, and what grew back isn’t identical to what was there before. The scar may lack hair follicles and oil glands, and is more susceptible to UV damage. Burn scars that cover a larger area are notorious for itching, which is caused by chronic dryness because of the lack of oil glands.

Your scar changes color because the blood vessels that run through it are more visible, and closer to the surface. It’s nothing to worry about.

It’s not all bad though- scars generally fade with age. Keeping the scar tissue well moisturized can help reduce the appearance over time. In a burn unit in Atlanta that I volunteer with, the physical therapy team keeps an cocoa butter in the treatment room to use with patients with healing burns. It seems to reduce contractures of the scars, and the overall appearance of the area. They believe so firmly in it, the staff buys it out of their own pocket- the hospital does not cover it because of insurance reasons.

I’d recommend Palmer’s Cocoa butter, it comes in a little jar, and is solid until you begin to rub it in. You can find it in many drug stores, and is inexpensive, around five dollars a jar. Use it in the morning, and at night. Keep your scar out of the sun- rubbing a bit of sunblock on it every morning isn’t such a bad idea.

Best of luck!
